  2. Jean Case is the CEO of the Case Foundation, which she and her husband, AOL co-founder Steve Case, created in 1997. In June 2006 she was appointed by President Bush to chair the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Before founding the Case Foundation, Case was a senior executive at AOL and also held strategic marketing positions at GE's Information Services Division and at The Source, the nation's first online service. In addition to heading the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, Case is also chair of PlayPumps International. She is currently a board member of Malaria No More, a New York-based nonprofit that was launched at the 2006 December White House Summit to end all deaths caused by malaria.

  3. Launched by Steve Case in April 2005, Revolution drives transformative change by shifting power to consumers and builds significant, category-defining companies in the process.

The Case Foundation was founded in 1997 by Steve and Jean Case to reflect their family's heartfelt commitment to addressing complex social challenges. Today, the foundation is pursuing a number of initiatives, but is particularly focused on three strategies: encouraging collaboration, supporting successful leaders and fostering entrepreneurship in the non-profit sector.

Steve and Jean have become keenly aware that the market forces that help outstanding business entrepreneurs succeed are absent in the non-profit sector. Many of the social entrepreneurs the Cases have worked with are frustrated with inefficiencies in the non-profit sector, in which many organizations with a shared mission too often compete counter-productively for grant money, and too rarely seek opportunities to work together to move their common agenda forward.

    Collaboration
With that in mind, The Case Foundation invests its time and money in organizations and initiatives that are committed to collaboration. In 1999, Steve and Jean spearheaded PowerUP, a partnership between several leading IT companies, youth serving organizations and foundations to create a network of nearly 1,000 community technology centers for underserved youth across the country.

  5. Steve Case:
    Chairman and CEO of Revolution
Few people have had the kind of impact on business and culture that Steve Case has had. A lifelong entrepreneur and innovator, Steve founded Revolution to create far-reaching change, to further empower consumers in key categories, and to build enduring business success.

As co-founder of AOL, Steve Case led the charge to make the Internet an essential part of everyday life. Although many first learned of AOL in the late 1990s and assumed it was an overnight success, in fact it was the result of a 20 year journey, with many twists and turns. It took 9 years for AOL to enroll its first 1 million subscribers - and then over the next 9 years went from 1 million to 20 million subscribers and its resulting $100+ billion market capitalization enabled it to merge with Time Warner and become the largest shareholder of the world's largest media, entertainment and communications company. In 2003, the Wall Street Journal concluded AOL was - even after a post-merger stock drop - the best investment over the previous 10 year period, outperforming the stocks of Microsoft, Walmart, and others.

  7. Civic Engagement: What's Missing?

Getting involved, helping out, and speaking up are the cornerstones of America, but research shows a decline in civic participation, increasing social isolation, and, with the exception of encouraging spikes among youth, only incremental gains in volunteering in the past few years.
