Orlando, FL was surrounded by marshland before Disney went in and started building theme parks in the 70s. This artificial imposition makes the place largely charmless, unless you come with kids or are entirely into theme parks. However, being in Florida, you can still relax and have a lot of fun.

  1. The the majesty and music of the Singing Tower
with its 60-bell carillon is one of the most awesome things one can experience.

We came in Christmas season and watched a performance. A video set up in the garden near the the 205-foot Gothic and art deco Carillon Tower. You can watch the carillonneur perform live. I was transfixed by the sight: here you are playing a musical instrument that is a landmark, and the divine sound you make can be heard in miles and miles around.

  2. This is said to be the first theme park in the area, and it shows. We enjoyed the Bird Aviary, the trees in and around Lake Eloise, and the Christmas lights all around the lake shores after dark. The old fashioned giant wheel ride at sunset over the lake was awesome, and the massive banyan tree in the Botanic Garden is just amazing.

The rest of the attractions are quite a letdown.

  3. It is incredible to set foot in the real place where the forefront of space exploration takes place.

The giant Saturn V rocket was just an incredible sight. A visit to the real control room of the Apollo mission highlighted man's unprecedented journey into the unknown. The IMAX 3D movie put you on the desolate moon surface, looking down deep gorges or up to the blue home planet beyond the lunar horizon.

On the downside, the exhibit about the International Space Station is a little weak and the "a dream does come true" theme is a bit overdone.

  4. Busch Garden is a theme park near Tampa. It has more impressive roller coaster rides than the African animals on exhibition.

We enjoyed the Christmas on Ice show, reminding one of the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes in New York City. However we dozed off during Katonga -- the African theme is just skin-deep over an entertainment form that is essentially American.

We had fun taking a rapid ride where people on a raft got wet or totally soaked based on your fortune.

The thrill rides are incredible here if you are into that type of things.

Avoid the train ride, which takes forever to get on and offers little to view.

  5. A great museum at an unlikely place: St. Petersburg, FL.

You can hear stories about the artist as a person and explanations of the meanings in each painting, and these come straight from the Dali himself as the American collectors were his personal friends.

  6. This is a great restaurant with superb service. We went to the one on the International Dr. While waiting to be seated, you can order a drink, sit on the patio, and enjoy a performance of relaxing Caribbean music.

  7. Go eat here!

This restaurant offers appetizer-sized dishes all can share. It is actually an artist studio with paintings on all the walls for sale. A lady was actually painting a landscape when we were there. In the mid of the dinner, a couple danced flamingo in the aisles while everyone cheered.

  8. The World Famous Boston Lobster Feast is now celebrating 18 years in Orlando! What started with a couple of lobsters and a dream has become three restaurants, millions of lobsters and lots of great, friendly service.

  9. This is the main touristy avenue lined with shops and restaurants.

The Premium Outlets and Prime Outlets are two big shopping malls at each end of the road. A bus goes up and down the line and cost $1 per ride or $3 for the day.

The road is intersected by a couple of perpendicular roads and it is easy to lose directions. Signs are poorly posted in general. Oftentimes it goes through long stretch of rural areas that are pitch black in the evenings.

  11. Just a place to stay. Services are quite poor. Front desk staff are quite inefficient.

The biggest benefit is you have free wireless to the Internet, so bring your laptop. It came in handy for us to look up Google maps.
