I want to buy a bike for leisure or possibly commute. I saw cheap bikes at WalMart, etc., but had the gut feeling that they won't be good. But what brands are good? How much I should pay for one? What are the metrics I should consider?
I tried the following queries on google:

then tried Yahoo! Answer with some success.
