Movie 2008

Here are movies we actually went to see in a theater this year. Hollywood has a knack to disappoint no matter what, so mostly we go to the matinée show. You should do the same.
  1. Kung Fu Panda - Movie - Review - The New York Times
At once fuzzy-wuzzy and industrial strength, the tacky-sounding “Kung Fu Panda” is high concept with a heart.

  2. Wall E
This is an environmentalist public service announcement masqueraded as a feature animation film. There is barely a story, little twist or climax, and not much laugh.

Is it a shocking revelation that if we keep exploiting nature in pursuit of material gratifications, we'll turn the earth into a garbage dump and ourselves into obese handicaps dependent on machines? Do we need a movie to tell us that? Can we just simply look around? The metaphorical fight over a single plant is made so literal -- and becomes the central plot -- that it is painful.

Sorry, you don't get a lot of credit for stating the obvious, no matter how beautifully it is done.

It is such a huge disappointment because the setup -- a trashed earth, a space adventure, and a robot with a soul -- has so much potential, yet none is fully developed into real stories with real conflicts.

  3. Indiana Jones 4
It's not as bad as many reviewers said it was. All previous episodes of Indiana Jones series have some unrealistic scenarios and people chose not to overanalyze. The archeology-alien association is actually quite fascinating and not far-fetched at all.

The problem is the story is not focused. The KGB as villains is a total disaster and completely sidetracked the movie. The lengthy car chase scene in the jungle with the Russians in pursuit is such a yawn. The fact that Soviet agents took over a top secret U.S. base in Nevada is just ludicrous.

Incidentally, the movie decries the red scare in the U.S. of the McCarthy era, but shows how KGB is running free on the U.S. soil at the same time. Such self-contradiction is just painful and indicates a high degree of sloppiness in the script.
